National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is all set to increase power Distribution Companies (Discos) tariffs by about 92 paisa per unit for November 2012 under the monthly controversial Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) pending with the Islamabad High Court.

The Regulator will hold a public hearing on December 26, 2012 wherein the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) will plead its case to justify the requested increase in tariff with certified documents. This raise will be given at a time when the NTDC has unleashed load shedding up to 10-12 hours in the rural areas and up to six hours in the urban areas.

Textile Industry in Punjab is lamenting the continuing energy crisis due to mismanagement of electricity and gas sectors with a growing number of units either shutting down or relocating abroad. "We have been buried alive by the present government," said one textile owner on condition of anonymity.

According to NTDC''s tariff petition, hydel generation rates are Rs 0.0809 per unit, coal Rs 3.7389 per unit, HSD Rs 21.6660 per unit, RFO Rs 16.1544 per unit, gas Rs 6.0131 per unit, nuclear Rs 1.1387 per unit, electricity imported from Iran Rs 9.5800 per unit, mixed Rs 10.1937 per unit and wind Rs 0.0044 per unit. The price of total generated energy is Rs 7.2298 per unit. However with supplemental charges of Rs 0.0544 per unit, sale to IPPs at Rs 20.3393 per unit and transmission losses of Rs 0.1815 per unit total cost comes to Rs 7.0348. In November 2012, total energy generated by different sources was 6,907.88 GWh of which 6,677.20 net was delivered to Discos. The total cost of this electricity has been calculated at Rs 48.274 billion.
